Grades 3-5
Classes
#14 December 3 - During this class, we completed our game. The students had a great time this semester working on their "family".
#13 November 19 - We played Tic-Tac-Math today solving cash-counting problems. We only have one class remaining, December 3. At this class, we will complete the Game of Life.
#12 November 12 - We continued working with currency word problems in class this week. As we continue to move around the game board, we discuss different issues and expenses.
#11 November 5 - We worked on "shopping" word problems today. The kids did a great job working as a team to figure out how to find the answer they needed. The problems included using currency, mutiplication, addition, and division. We also continued to move around the game board.
#10 October 29 - Budgets and planning before spending were our main topics today.
#9 October 22 - This week, we reviewed what the students learned about wants vs needs. We discussed the checkbooks the students made and the parts of a checkbook. This is in preparation for upcoming lessons on bills and budgeting. There is no homework this week.
#8 - October 15 - Students worked on a game to learn about wants vs needs.
#7 - October 8 - In class, we went over the working with coins assignment from last week.
For homework, they are supposed to make a checkbook using the handouts I gave them. They just cut it out and then put it together. Any order is fine after the cover page. If they want to decorate the cover page, that is fine. This is due on October 22nd.
#6 - October 1 - Today we covered making change and paychecks. The students practiced adding orders for a concession stand and figuring the change due back to customers. They also leared about the basics of a check with their first "pay day" in the game. (We have not covered taxes yet, so we did not discuss the pay stub.)
For homework, they have a worksheet on working with coins. Next week, we will be continuing our work with checkbooks. Progress reports will go out after our next class. Please let me know what email address you would like your child's report sent to.
#5 - September 24 - The students learning about banking works this week in class. We covered ATMs, Personal Identification Numbers, overdrawn, deposit, balance, account, withdraw, and transactions.
Homework is a worksheet on making change. Next week, we will continue working on making change and have our first Pay Day and pay checks.
#4 - September 17 - This week in class, we discussed Where Does Money Really Come From? The students learned about where the money in the United States is made. We also continued our discussion on jobs and what it means to earn money. On the game board, the students have reached the "get married" area (which has been very exciting).
There is no homework for the next class. We will start the lessons on banking next week.
#3 - September 10 - We started down the college path on the game of life this week. This included adding entries to our ledgers and and talking about student loans and scholarships. We also discussed some fractions and percentages. There will be a NOTEBOOK check next week (September 17), so students will need to have all their completed work in their blue notebook for class next week. This will be important because we will start having "pay day" spots on the board. The students were given a "time card" to help them think about what kinds of things they would do on their job. For example, a vet would have appointments to see their animal patients. The purpose of this exercise is to show them what would go into a 40 hour work week.
#2 - September 3 - In this class, we discussed the careers the students had choosen. Since all the careers included the college path, we briefly covered loans (they will be covered again in a few weeks). The students also made a Fantasy or Dream Job? wheel. There was no homework this week.
#1 - August 27 - Our first class went well. The students received their "blue" notebooks, cars, and materials to start their journey on the game. We also worked on a money terms booklet that we will be using this semester. If they did not complete the booklet in class, they will need to work on it at home. The booklet needs to be glued or taped to the blue paper in the back of the notebok.
Students will pick a career and we will discuss any education requirements or experience needed for the career and potential income. For homework after the first class, the students will research their ideal career. (See below if you need an additional copy of the career worksheet)
