Consumer Math - Middle School
Spring Semester Classes
Have a Great Summer!
April 29 - No Class - Weather Day
April 22 - We completed the game of Lifegateopoly and the students figured their final Net Worth.
April 15 - No Class - Standardized Test (no homework due to testing)
April 8 - After completing presentations, we looked at what goes into a budget.
April 1 - Students did a great job on their presentations. They used what we learned about marketing and advertising to share a lot about their products/brands - M&Ms, Nike, Apple, Samsung, and Nintendo. The students are well on their way to being smart consumers.
March 18 - We will be discussing being smart consumers - using our resources wisely. One way we can become smart is by understanding how marketing of products can influence us. As part of this, the students will have a project and presentation on a product they choose. This will be due APRIL 1. There is no class on March 25 so this will give the students two weeks to finish the assignment. A link to the handout file is above.
Mid-Term Progress Report - (Below is the text from the mid-term progress report. Emails will be sent to parents with grade information.)
Topics Covered So Far This Semester Include:
· Monopoly and other economic terms and definitions
· Figuring discounts and sale prices
· Transferring percents to decimals
· Using equations to figure percent increases and mark ups
· Keeping track of income and expenses in a ledger
· Calculating simple interest
· Comparing and figuring four methods of getting paid – commission, salary, hourly, and royalties
· Working with percents less than 1% and percents greater than 100%
· Playing Game of Monopoly – buying houses and hotels, paying rent, auctioning properties, buying and trading properties
March 4 - This week during class we used a worksheet to compare using percents greater than 100% and percents less than 1% and changing percents to decimals and decimals to percents. We auctioned off the last property on the monopoly board. For homework over the next two weeks, students have a Percent Applications Worksheet that combines many of the things we have covered in the class so far this year. (link is at top of this page)
February 25 - The students are all trying to get that last property for sale in LifeGateopoly. Some students have started getting monopolies and buying houses and hotels.
For our lesson this week, we covered four methods of getting paid for your work - commission, salary, hourly, and royalties. For homework, the students should complete the worksheet handed out in class "Earning by piece or by commission". They do not have to do the "on your own" at the bottom of the worksheet.
February 18 - We worked on commissions and percents less than 1 in today's class. There is no new homework from this class, but some students are still working on their two homework assignments we have had. These are due at the February 25th class so that I will have grades for the students progress reports.
No Class - February 11 - Homework from February 4 is due February 18.
February 4 - Today we covered how to calculate simple interest and the factors involved in simple interest (interest = principle x rate x time). For homework, students have a worksheet on what they have learned on interest. If they have not completed their homework from January 28, it is also due next class.
January 28 - Price Increase and Calculating Mark-Ups are the topics we covered today. We have also been working with changing percents to decimals. With a shorter class period, we were still able to play some rounds of LifeGateopoly. The students are keeping up with their ledger.
The students have a worksheet as homework "Mark-up and Discount". Below are the equations that we have been using to do these problems.
Mark-up
new price = orignal price (1 + % increase)
Percent Increase
% Increase = new amount - original amount
original amount
Percent Decrease
% decrease = original price - new price
original price
January 21 - Today, we covered discounts and sale prices. The students learned how to calculate the sale price when the percent discount is given, calculate the percent discout when the sale price is given and apply percent decrease to discounts and sale prices. We also studied transfering percents to decimals. Next week we will cover percent increases and mark ups. We continued with LifeGateopoly this week. There is no homework due next week.
January 14 - In today's class, we started our LifeGateopoly
class. The students started buying properties with local names and we even had two "go to jail". Next week we will really get back into our schedule with discounts and sale prices in addition to moving on in the game. There was no homework this week.
January 7 - Class Cancelled for Weather
*We will be starting our LifeGateopoly (Monopoly) game during next week's class. I've attached some things we were going to review and some new terms we were going to talk about during the first class. Please read over these for next week.

Homework due December 3 - Worksheet on interest and discounts (some students finished this in class).
#12 November 12 - After reviewing what we learned from the Theme Park handout homework, we started learning about how to calculate simple interest (Interest = Principle X Rate x Time in Years) and what the definition of the terms in the equation. We also discussed that what you pay back is Principle plus Interest and how the size of the rate and the length of time affect the interest.
Homework due November 19 - Interest Worksheet.
#11 November 5 - We finished our section on insurance today, reviewing terms and the process of filing a claim. We completed an activity in class where we determined the best "special offer" for different families to use on a trip to an Aquarium.
Homework due November 12 - Theme Park handout - Use the information on the worksheet to plan a trip for 6 (or more) to a theme park and a day trip to the location of their choice.
#10 October 29 - We learned about how insurance works and did an in-class activity on health insurance.
Homework - Insurance timeline.
#9 October 22 - This week, we reviewed what the students learned about
wants vs needs. We discussed common things in a household budget.

#8 - October 15 - Students worked on a game to learn about wants vs needs.
#7 - October 8 - We reviewed the math skills used in the Concession Stand word problems and the "Lunchtime!" worksheet in today's class. We also discussed bills, our first step in making a budget.
For homework, the students are to research prices for the "Then & Now" inflation project. The target year is 1963 - 50 years ago. This is due on October 15. On the 15th, the students will be working on wants vs. needs to help them learn about prioritizing their expenses.
#6 - October 1 - Today we practiced math word problems for "Billy's Concession Stand." Skills used included working with currency/decimals, making change, profit, and setting up equations. Next week, we will start working on bills in preparation for learning about wants vs. needs and budgets in the coming weeks.
For homework, students need to complete the Concession Stand worksheet and the worksheet "Lunchtime!". These are due October 8. Grades for those assignments, the previous notebook check, and homework will be on the progress report. These will go out next Wednesday. Please let me know what email address you would like your child's report sent to.
